Aircraft noise and noise protection
Keeping noise to a minimum and creating transparency: our commitment to noise protection and reliable aircraft noise information at STR.

Our commitment to noise reduction
The aircraft noise caused by planes taking off and landing is only indirectly within our sphere of influence. Nevertheless, it is important to us to actively work to keep noise pollution to a minimum – in the spirit of good neighbourliness.
Good to know: For people living in the airport’s noise protection zone, the 1987 planning approval decision applies. This means that noise levels must not exceed those of 1978.
The good news: Our regular measurements show that average noise pollution around Stuttgart Airport has fallen significantly over the last few decades. Incidentally, we were the first German airport to introduce such measurements back in 1969.
Less noise at night
Special night flight restrictions apply between 11 pm and 6 am to ensure that the peace and quiet of the neighbourhood is not disturbed. In addition, we have been providing incentives in the form of noise-related take-off and landing charges since the 1970s: the quieter and lower in emissions an aircraft is, the lower the charges. This benefits airlines with modern aircraft types – such as the Airbus A320neo, which has significantly quieter engines.

Transparency through measurement data
We continuously record the noise emissions caused by air traffic. There are eight outdoor measuring stations in populated areas of the municipalities of Scharnhausen, Berkheim, Neuhausen, Bernhausen, Stetten, Steinenbronn, Echterdingen and Denkendorf.
Tip: If you are interested, you can find the evaluations in our monthly aircraft noise reports – or directly in the online tool TraVis (Track Visualisation). There you will find live data for complete transparency.

Task: Rest
The noise protection officer at Stuttgart Airport is an employee of the regional council. He is responsible for reducing avoidable aircraft noise and investigating complaints. This allows identifying and prosecuting violations of noise protection regulations.
Good to know: The noise protection officer for Stuttgart Airport can be reached on +49 711 722 493 51. He is supported by German Air Traffic Control (DFS), which records all flight routes precisely.
Transparency in flight schedules
Anyone interested in past flight paths can view them using the DFS online tool Stanley Track. The desired time period can be selected in the menu.
Aircraft noise commission
Joint consultation
There is a regional aircraft noise commission for every German airport with a noise protection area – including STR. Among other things, it advises the DFS on the determination of flight routes and flight procedures.
Sound insulation for residents
To ensure that residents living near Stuttgart Airport continue to enjoy a quiet environment, we are covering the costs of structural noise protection measures in neighbouring residential properties. These reimbursement claims are handled in accordance with the Aircraft Noise Act via our noise abatement programme.
Good to know: A dedicated website provides owners with detailed information and helps them with the application process.
Night flight restriction
To minimise night-time aircraft noise, no civil jet aircraft are permitted to land at Stuttgart Airport between 11.30 pm and 6 am. Late landings until midnight are permitted if the scheduled arrival time was before 11:30 pm.
Good to know: No machines may be started after 11 pm. However, there are exceptions – for example, for approved delayed take-offs and landings, emergency flights for disaster relief, medical assistance, measurement flights for technical installations or military flights.
Propeller aircraft and night airmail services are subject to restrictions on night-time take-offs and may only operate if they comply with certain noise limits. Since 1 July 2019, a high night-time surcharge has been levied on the noise charge for such exceptions.
