Tasks and role
There are statutory aircraft noise commissions at German airports for which a noise protection area has been defined. They have various tasks to keep noise pollution as low as possible for the local population.
- Recommendations for flight routes and procedures: The commissions advise on which flight routes and procedures will help to minimize aircraft noise in the interests of local residents, passengers and employees.
- Measures against aircraft noise: The active and passive noise abatement measures that can be used to reduce the impact of aircraft noise are discussed.
- Locations of noise measurement stations: The commissions determine at which locations measuring stations will be set up in order to correctly record exposure.
- Informing the public: The commissions inform the public about noise pollution and protective measures.
Link between all parties involved
The aircraft noise commissions bring together the interests of many stakeholders. For example, the surrounding communities, the Federal Association Against Aircraft Noise, the Ministry of Transport as the highest state authority and airlines are all at the table.
The results of the consultations are incorporated into the authorities' decisions. Even if the authorities are not bound by the recommendations, they must justify any deviations. This gives the commissions weight.
