Stuttgart Airport at a glance
Stuttgart Airport has been a key transport hub for Baden-Württemberg for over 100 years – with an impact extending beyond the region’s borders. Its history stretches from the first flights at Cannstatter Wasen, through the Böblingen airfield from 1924 onwards, to today’s international airport in the Fildern region. The fundamental functions of air transport have remained the same – it is the infrastructure, technology and passenger processes that have changed.
Direct connections within Europe: The airport’s route network is focused on Europe and offers direct connections to numerous major cities and international hubs. The STR site is centrally located within the Baden-Württemberg conurbation, spanning the municipalities of Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Filderstadt, Ostfildern, Neuhausen and Stuttgart. More than 19 million people live in the catchment area.

Flughafen Stuttgart GmbH (FSG) is tasked with ensuring Baden-Württemberg’s international connectivity. The state of Baden-Württemberg holds 65 per cent of the shares, whilst the city of Stuttgart holds 35 per cent.
Manfred Rommel Airport
Since 2014, Stuttgart Airport has been known as ‘Manfred Rommel Airport’ – in memory of the former Lord Mayor of the state capital and former Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Flughafen Stuttgart GmbH.
4 terminals, 1 runway and a total of 56 aircraft parking positions – across an area of around 400 hectares, Flughafen Stuttgart GmbH ensures that operations run smoothly.
The core task: to ensure the airport functions effectively. This remit is divided into two areas: aviation and non-aviation.
Aviation – everything to do with flight operations:
Traffic planning: Coordination of take-off and landing times
Traffic control: Monitoring and securing the apron, taxiways and the runway
Passenger services: Terminal supervision, passenger services, lost property office and more
Non-Aviation – Airport Infrastructure and Services:
Construction, operation and maintenance of the runway, taxiways and apron, as well as all infrastructure facilities
Renting and leasing of office space, shops, restaurants and car parks
Supply of electricity, water and heating – as well as cleaning, waste disposal and information and communications technology
