Before your journey
Whether it’s a dog, cat or bird: many airlines allow you to travel with pets – though there are restrictions. For example, rodents are generally not permitted. Which types of animals are allowed depends on the airline in question.
We recommend checking the relevant airline’s website or calling their customer service.
Your destination also plays a role. This is because every country has its own entry requirements for animals – often including quarantine or documentation requirements. Up-to-date information is available from the Foreign Office.
Documents
A pet passport is required for travel abroad. This passport confirms that all necessary vaccinations have been carried out and is issued by your vet. In addition, every pet must have a microchip containing all relevant identification details.
Check-in with a pet
To ensure a smooth start, it’s worth allowing a little extra time – ideally, passengers travelling with pets should arrive at the airport around two hours before departure.
- You must present your pet’s passport at check-in. You should keep this to hand at all times afterwards.
- Late-night check-in is not available for pets.
- Pets are handed over at the bulky luggage counter. There, the pet is weighed, taken through security and then placed in its transport crate.
Means of transport
A suitable carrier or bag is required to ensure safe transport. This should be sturdy, escape-proof and comply with animal welfare regulations. Suitable carriers can be purchased from specialist pet shops. No carriers are available for sale or hire at Stuttgart Airport.
Transporting animals in the cabin
Each airline decides individually whether animals are permitted to travel in the cabin – often the same size restrictions apply as for hand luggage. Each airline sets its own limits on permitted dimensions and weight. Some airlines also specify whether the animal must be in a carrier or may be carried in a bag. A quick check with the airline in advance will clarify the situation.
