Accessible travel

Consideration, responsibility, attentiveness

We want to ensure that travel to and from the venue is as accessible as possible for everyone – including people with reduced mobility.

The following information will help you prepare well for your journey and get off to a smooth start.

Be well prepared before you set off

Anyone requiring assistance at the airport should request the help they need well in advance – ideally when making their booking. Requests should be made via the airline or travel agent. They can also clarify the extent of the assistance required and what options are available.

The airline organises the support and requests the necessary assistance services from the airport. At the airport, the boarding support team from SAG (Stuttgart Airport Ground Handling GmbH) provides the mobility service.

In addition, free wheelchairs are available in Terminal 3 on the departures level. These can be collected from the Mobility Service counter; please note any specific conditions set by the airlines.

Register in good time

Early notification is important – it is governed by European Union Regulation 1107/2006.

Only if the information is provided in good time can Stuttgart Airport organise appropriate assistance and coordinate the necessary services.

Mobility service at the airport

The transport service is available daily from 4 am until midnight.

Anyone wishing to use the Mobility Service should arrive at the airport approximately 2.5 to 3 hours before departure.

The service provides assistance with boarding and disembarking the aircraft, as well as wheelchairs for use at the airport (please note the airlines’ terms and conditions).

If the counter in the terminal is temporarily unstaffed, the service can be reached via any airport telephone by dialling 4000.

Good to know: The Mobility Service is specifically designed for people with reduced mobility. Anyone needing help with their luggage can use the Luggage Service – they will be happy to carry and transport your suitcases.

Level of mobility – international classifications

To enable the airline to organise appropriate assistance, the level of mobility should be specified at the time of booking. This ensures that the necessary assistance can be arranged in good time.

The following international abbreviations help to categorise the level of assistance required:

  • WCHC (Wheelchair Cabin Seat): The passenger travels in their own wheelchair. The wheelchair is required throughout the entire journey – the passenger is unable to move about on board without assistance.
  • WCHS (Wheelchair Steps): The passenger is unable to climb stairs, but can manage short distances on foot.
  • WCHR (Wheelchair Ramp): A wheelchair is only required for longer distances. The passenger can climb stairs unaided.
  • BLND: For blind or visually impaired travellers.
  • DEAF: For deaf, hard-of-hearing or deaf-mute travellers.
  • DEAF-BLND: For travellers with combined visual and hearing impairments.
  • DPNA (Disabled Passenger with Intellectual or Developmental Disability Needing Assistance): For people with cognitive impairments – for example, travellers with dementia who are travelling alone

Stuttgart Airport can be reached via the A8 motorway (Karlsruhe–Munich) or the B27 federal road. After taking the ‘Flughafen Stuttgart’ exit, follow the signs for Arrivals, Departures or your booked car park.

The Kiss & Fly zone is located directly in front of the terminals – you can stop here for up to 8 minutes free of charge.

Good to know: The provider Rollimobil offers accessible hire cars for people with physical disabilities.

The S-Bahn station at the airport is equipped to cater for wheelchair users and the visually impaired. The lifts and ticket machines can also be used without any barriers.

You will need to change lifts on the way from the S-Bahn level to the departures area.

Good to know: The Stuttgart Transport and Tariff Association (VVS) provides a free map showing accessible S-Bahn stations.

Simply call +49 711 194 49 – they can also provide timetable enquiries and information on departure and connection options.

If you’re travelling via Stuttgart Central Station, you can change there onto the S-Bahn to the airport. Passengers can then reach their destination on the S2 or S3 lines .

Tip: The station mission will be happy to help. They can be reached on +49 711 292 995.

After landing at the airport, it is also possible to continue your journey by train.

Good to know: Opening hours, fares and all further information are available by calling +49 711 2092-4733.

Travel information and the number for the Mobility Service Centre, which helps plan accessible journeys, can also be found on the Deutsche Bahn website.

To travel to the STR from Stuttgart city centre, simply contact the Stuttgart Taxi Dispatch Centre on +49 711 194 10.

Accessible parking at Stuttgart Airport

Accessible parking spaces are clearly marked in all car parks and multi-storey car parks at the airport. The parking guidance system provides clear, up-to-date directions to available spaces.

In the multi-storey car parks, accessible parking spaces are located on the ground floor, right next to the entrances.

If you encounter any problems entering or exiting, simply press the call button at the barrier – the control centre will assist you.

Tip: For journeys with passengers holding a disability card, a longer stopping time applies in the Kiss & Fly zone. The vehicle may remain parked for up to 60 minutes. Please simply show your disability card to Apcoa staff or when entering via the call button.

If you have any questions about parking, Apcoa Autoparking can be contacted on +49 711 948-4893.

In the terminal and at check-in

On the day of departure, head first to your airline’s check-in desk. The airport signage will help you find your way.

If you have any questions, you can always contact the information desks in Terminal 3 – the team on site will be happy to help.

Check-in begins upon arrival at the airport. From this point onwards, personalised assistance is organised – as required, right up until departure.

Important: Not every disability is immediately apparent. To ensure that personal needs are taken into account, it is helpful to actively draw the staff’s attention to them at check-in.

All terminals have accessible routes and lifts, enabling you to move between levels independently.

Tip: If you’d like to spend some time with your companions after check-in, you’re welcome to do so. Please make sure to report to the Mobility Service or check-in desk in good time to be collected.

Transport to the gate will then be provided by the Mobility Service (Boarding Support). This service is located on the departures level of Terminal 3 – and can be contacted no later than one hour before departure.

The Mobility Service can be contacted on +49 711 948-4000 or by email at info@sag.aero.

Travelling in a wheelchair

When boarding the aircraft, it is sometimes necessary to transfer from your own wheelchair to an airport wheelchair. At Stuttgart Airport, free wheelchairs and trained staff are on hand to assist you.

Your own wheelchair will be transported in the aircraft’s hold. To ensure this runs smoothly, please hand in your wheelchair at the bulky luggage counter in Terminal 3. This ensures it is loaded safely and on time.

Important: For battery-powered wheelchairs, the transfer must take place particularly early – as special regulations apply to their transport.

Tip: Passengers should find out the battery type when booking and inform the airline of this.

When checking in, you must disconnect the battery yourself, secure it and insulate the terminals. The wheelchair is then checked in via the oversized luggage counter as described.

Greater consideration for people with invisible disabilities

Around one in six people live with a disability. In around 80 per cent of cases, this is not apparent at first glance. For some, navigating busy and stimulating environments can be challenging.

To ensure that everyone’s time at Stuttgart Airport runs as smoothly as possible, STR has been part of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Programme since April 2025.

The sunflower symbol allows travellers to draw attention to their invisible disability – voluntarily and without having to explain themselves. This helps to foster greater understanding and encourage consideration in everyday life.

Service and Information

All lifts in the terminals are accessible.

Guide dogs and assistance dogs are permitted in all areas of the airport. Whether they can be taken into the aircraft cabin depends on the airline in question – please enquire directly with them.

Tip: Stuttgart Airport offers a luggage transport service. For example, your luggage will be taken from the taxi to the check-in desk. The service can be booked for a small fee – by telephone on +49 151 46341364 (Monday to Sunday) or by email to info@sag.aero (Monday to Friday).

Electronic revolving doors automatically adjust their speed and are also wheelchair-accessible.

Accessible toilets are available in all terminals.

If you’d like to stay overnight near the airport, there are three hotels in the immediate vicinity – all three are around 200 metres from the terminals:
