Barrier-free travel

Consideration, responsibility, attention

We want the arrival and departure to be as barrier-free as possible for everyone - including people with reduced mobility.

The following tips will help you to prepare your trip well and get off to a well-planned start.

Start well prepared

If you need assistance at the airport, you should register the required help in good time - preferably at the time of booking. The notification should be made via the airline or travel agency. They can also clarify to what extent assistance is needed and what options are available.

The airline will organize the assistance and apply to the airport for the necessary support services. At the airport, the boarding support of SAG (Stuttgart Airport Ground Handling GmbH) takes over the mobility service.

In addition, free wheelchairs are available in Terminal 3 on the departure level. These can be obtained from the mobility service desk; please note the special conditions of the airlines.

Good to know: Passengers with reduced mobility can be picked up directly at the baggage carousel. Please report to customs if you are picking up someone.

Register in good time

Early notification is important - it is regulated in the European Union Regulation 1107/2006.

Stuttgart Airport can only organize suitable support and coordinate the required service if the information is provided in good time.

Mobility service at the airport

The mobility service is available daily from 4 a.m. to midnight.

If you wish to use the mobility service, you should arrive at the airport approximately 2.5 to 3 hours before departure.

Here you can find assistance getting on or off the plane, as well as wheelchairs for use at the airport (please note the airlines' conditions).

If the counter in the terminal is temporarily unmanned, the service can be reached via any airport telephone on 4000.

Good to know: The mobility service is specially designed for people with reduced mobility. If you need help with your luggage, you can use the luggage service - they will be happy to carry and transport your suitcases.

Mobility level - international classifications

To enable the airline to organize suitable assistance, the degree of mobility should be specified at the time of booking. In this way, the necessary assistance can be organized in good time.

The following international abbreviations help to classify the level of assistance required:

  • WCHC (Wheelchair Cabin Seat): Passengers travel in their own wheelchairs. The wheelchair is required for the entire journey - even on board it is not possible to move around without assistance.
  • WCHS (Wheelchair Steps): Climbing stairs is not possible, but short distances on foot are feasible.
  • WCHR (Wheelchair Ramp): A wheelchair is only required for longer distances. Climbing stairs independently is possible.
  • BLND: For blind or visually impaired travelers.
  • DEAF: For deaf, hard of hearing or deaf-mute travelers.
  • DEAF-BLND: For passengers with a combined visual and hearing impairment.
  • DPNA (Disabled Passenger with Intellectual or Developmental Disability Needing Assistance): For people with cognitive impairments - for example, travelers with dementia who are traveling alone

Arrival

Stuttgart Airport can be reached via the A 8 motorway (Karlsruhe–Munich) or the B 27 federal highway. After the ‘Flughafen Stuttgart’ exit, follow the signs for arrivals, departures or your booked car park.

The Kiss & Fly zone is located directly in front of the terminals, where you can stop for up to 8 minutes free of charge.

Good to know: The provider Rollimobil offers accessible rental cars for people with physical disabilities.

The S-Bahn station at the airport is wheelchair- and blind-friendly. Lifts and ticket machines are also accessible.

You will need to change lifts on the way from the S-Bahn level to the departure area.

Good to know: The Stuttgart Transport and Tariff Association (VVS) provides a free overview map of accessible S-Bahn stations.

Simply call +49 711 194 49 for timetable information and details on departure and transfer options.

Barrier-free parking at Stuttgart Airport

Barrier-free parking spaces are marked on all parking lots and in the parking garages at the airport. The parking guidance system shows the way to free spaces in a clear and up-to-date manner.

In the parking garages, the barrier-free parking spaces are located on the first floor, directly next to the entrances.

If you have problems entering or exiting, simply press the call button at the barrier - the control center will help you.

Tip: The parking areas marked in green are particularly inexpensive and ideal for long-term parkers.

If you have any questions about parking, please contact Apcoa Autoparking on +49 711 948-4893.

In the terminal and at check-in

On the day of departure, the first stop is the airline check-in desk. The airport signage will help you find your way.

If you have any questions, you can contact the information desk in Terminal 3 at any time - the team on site will be happy to help.

After arriving at the airport, check-in begins. From here, individual assistance is organized - as required until departure.

Important: Not every restriction is recognizable at first glance. To ensure that personal needs can be taken into account, it is helpful to actively point this out to staff at check-in.

All terminals have barrier-free routes and elevators that allow passengers to move between levels independently.

Tip: If you would like to spend time with your companions after check-in, you are welcome to do so. Please notify the mobility service or check-in desk in good time so that you can be picked up.

Later transportation to the gate will then be provided by the mobility service (boarding support). This can be found in Terminal 3 on the departures level - and can be reached at least one hour before departure.

The mobility service can be contacted on +49 711 948-4000 or by e-mail at info@sag.aero.

Traveling with a wheelchair

When boarding an aircraft, it is sometimes necessary to transfer from your own wheelchair to an airport wheelchair. At Stuttgart Airport, free wheelchairs and trained staff are available to provide assistance.

Personal wheelchairs are transported in the hold of the aircraft. To ensure that this works smoothly, please check in your wheelchair at the bulky baggage counter in Terminal 3. This will ensure that it is loaded safely and on time.

Important: Battery-powered wheelchairs must be changed particularly early - as special regulations apply to transportation.

Tip: Travelers should find out about the battery type at the time of booking and inform the airline of this.

The battery must be disconnected, secured and the terminals insulated when checking in. The wheelchair is then checked in via the bulky baggage as described.

More consideration for people with invisible impairments

Around one in six people live with an impairment. For around 80 percent of them, it is not immediately apparent. For some, it can be challenging to find their way around busy and stimulating environments.

To ensure that everyone's stay at Stuttgart Airport runs as smoothly as possible, STR has been part of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program since April 2025.

With the sunflower identification symbol, travelers can draw attention to their invisible impairment - voluntarily and without any obligation to declare it. This creates more understanding and promotes consideration in everyday life.
