Level of mobility – international classifications
To enable the airline to organise appropriate assistance, the level of mobility should be specified at the time of booking. This ensures that the necessary assistance can be arranged in good time.
The following international abbreviations help to categorise the level of assistance required:
- WCHC (Wheelchair Cabin Seat): The passenger travels in their own wheelchair. The wheelchair is required throughout the entire journey – the passenger is unable to move about on board without assistance.
- WCHS (Wheelchair Steps): The passenger is unable to climb stairs, but can manage short distances on foot.
- WCHR (Wheelchair Ramp): A wheelchair is only required for longer distances. The passenger can climb stairs unaided.
- BLND: For blind or visually impaired travellers.
- DEAF: For deaf, hard-of-hearing or deaf-mute travellers.
- DEAF-BLND: For travellers with combined visual and hearing impairments.
- DPNA (Disabled Passenger with Intellectual or Developmental Disability Needing Assistance): For people with cognitive impairments – for example, travellers with dementia who are travelling alone
