Test of the departure route
From 23 February 2023 to 22 February 2024, a trial operation was conducted for a new TEDGO departure route from Stuttgart Airport. German Air Traffic Control, in collaboration with the airlines, tested a modified flight path. On average, this involved a maximum of two take-offs per hour – initially for a period of one year. The departure route is now in regular use.
Background: The departure route from the eastern runway has been adjusted to head south. The aim of such changes is generally to reduce kerosene consumption and minimise noise pollution for local residents as much as possible. However, what brings relief to some may lead to increased aircraft noise for others.
In the densely populated Neckar Valley, fewer aircraft movements were audible during the trial period. The new route, known as TEDGO neu, is shorter and passes, amongst other places, Wolfschlugen, Nürtingen-Hardt and Oberensingen.
Recommendations for new flight routes come from the Aircraft Noise Commission. This body exists at all airports with noise protection zones – including Stuttgart Airport. The Commission advises the German Air Traffic Control (DFS) on the development and assessment of flight routes and procedures. The decision on the permanent introduction of new routes is taken by the DFS and the Federal Supervisory Authority for Air Traffic Control.
