Hygiene measures

Who is required to wear a mask?

Masks are compulsory during the entire stay on the airport premises:

  • Medical masks are required in all buildings. The following standards are permitted: surgical masks (DIN EN 14683:2019-10), FFP2 (DIN EN 149:2001) or KN95/N95 masks.
  • From 6 up to and including 14 years of age, a mouth-nose cover is sufficient indoors and outdoors.
  • Children under 6 years of age are not required to wear masks.

Exceptions are possible – please refer to the regulations on compulsory masks in Baden-Württemberg. The general decree of the Esslingen district also applies.

Do children need to wear a face mask?

Children aged 6 up to and including 14 only need a mouth-nose cover, older children must wear a medical mask.

Can I also use a face visor as a mask?

No. According to the Corona Ordinance of the State of Baden-Württemberg, face visors are not considered an adequate substitute for mouth-nose covers or medical masks. They can only be used as an additional measure. Therefore, mouth-nose covers or medical masks are required in all areas where the mask requirement under the Corona Ordinance applies. Thus, the wearing of a medical mask or respirator (FFP2/KN95/N95) is also compulsory in the terminals, and mouth-nose covers for children aged 6 up to and including 14. In addition, a mouth-nose cover must be worn in all public outdoor areas of the airport premises.

Do I need a certificate if I cannot wear a mask?

Yes, a certificate is required. It should be carried along and presented when requested.

Can I purchase a mask at the airport?

Can I purchase disinfectant at the airport?

The following shops offer disinfectant (changes possible). In addition, you can use the contactless hand sanitizers located throughout the terminals.

How can I protect myself in situations where distance to others cannot be kept?

Inside airport buildings, both travellers and employees must wear a medical mask. This applies especially if the minimum distance of 1.5 metres cannot be maintained continuously or if no other protective measures such as separating panels are available.

How is security screening currently carried out, in terms of social distancing and hygiene measures?

Keeping your distance to others and paying attention to signs and floor markings also applies at the security checkpoints. The contents of your pockets and smaller items, such as your mobile phone, should be stowed in your hand luggage or jacket. Please wear a medical mask during security screening as well and only take it off when requested.

How many pieces of hand luggage am I currently allowed to take with me?

Only one piece of hand luggage is currently allowed at the security checkpoint. In addition, airlines have established their own regulations for handling carry-ons. Please check with your airline directly regarding these rules.

Due to additional regulations regarding Covid-19, longer wait times may occur. Please allow sufficient time in the current situation as well.

Before travelling abroad, please check the information of your destination country regarding entry and test requirements. The regulations of the German Foreign Office apply. Passengers whose test does not fulfill the respective requirements will be rejected at the gate.

What are the current entry requirements?

Since 30 March 2021, all persons older than 6 years and travelling to Germany by air must present a negative Covid-19 test result before embarking on their journey. The test must be done abroad no more than 48 hours before entry.

Are risk areas categorized into different types?

Yes, there are 3 types of risk areas. Passengers are thus urged to observe the relevant entry and quarantine regulations, as well as the compulsory testing in the destination state, before travelling to Germany.

When do I have to self-isolate?

When entering Germany from abroad, please observe the country-specific entry quarantine regulations of your destination federal state as well as the generally applicable regulations for entering Germany by air.

Can I skip quarantine if I test negative for Covid-19?

When entering Germany from a risk area, you are still obliged to self-isolate for ten days. The quarantine can be terminated with a negative test after five days at the earliest. In addition, a test upon entry is required since 11.01.2021. This can be fulfilled by testing within 48 hours before arrival or by testing immediately after entry. This can be done at the border as well as in a test centre or at the place of accommodation (if travelling there directly). All established doctors who offer tests as well as public and private test centres are authorised to test. A negative test on entry does not serve as an exemption from the quarantine requirement. Different regulations apply for high risk and virus variant areas.
